(SALEM) - Linn County Sheriff`s Office divers recovered the body of 13-year-old Maria Martinez Sunday just before 2:00 PM in about 25-feet of water in Walter Wirth Lake at Cascade Gateway Park. An Oregon Army National Guard Helicopter from Salem on it`s way back from a training mission helped in locating the teen's body. Martinez was reported missing, after she and a friend were swimming in Walter Wirth Lake. The friend swam back to shore, looked back, saw Martinez go underwater, she never came back up. The Salem Fire Department`s water rescue team, along with the Linn County dive team spent until 10:00 PM Saturday night searching for Martinez. City of Salem Parks officials say the lake was made for fishing, NOT swimming. The lake water is very murky and cold. The lake`s bottom is very rocky, with logs, and contains lots of fishing debris, such as lines and hooks. There are warning signs posted warning swimmers of the lake dangers. There is NO life guard posted at the lake. The Salem Fire Department says it responds to some 40 water rescue calls a year. Since Friday, there have been four deaths on Oregon waterways. Governor Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff Monday, in memory of Private First Class Thomas Tucker of Madras. Tucker and a soldier from Texas were kidnapped by an umbrella group of Al Quida on June 16th. Their bodies were found last week near Baghdad. The Salem Police Department, along with The Salem Fire Department will be increasing their enforcement of illegal fireworks this Fourth of July holiday. Salem police spokesman Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says every year officers respond to numerous calls from citizens involving illegal fireworks. Many of these calls originate from citizens concerned about fire danger, noise violations, property damage, and potential injury, Kohlmeyer said. Extra officers will be staffed July 4th to deal specifically with illegal fireworks calls. Citizens should be aware that in addition to losing their illegal and expensive fireworks they could and likely will face criminal charges and possible arrest. Kohlmeyer said possessing illegal fireworks is a class B misdemeanor with a possible fine of up to $250.
