(SALEM, OR) - This week, the Republican-led Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives passed an immigration bill inappropriately named the “SAFE Act,” that would make the presence of immigrants in the United States without proper documentation a federal crime and empower states and counties around the country to turn their police into immigration agents.

As the Senate prepares to vote on legislation in the coming week that would provide a path to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans, the House bipartisan group is putting the finishing touches on its own bill that also includes a roadmap to citizenship. Despite the bipartisan approach in both chambers of Congress to include a pathway to citizenship, immigrant and community leaders are outraged that the House Judiciary Committee is acting alone and advancing legislation that would criminalize immigrant communities.

“It’s as though Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee have forgotten every lesson from the November election when the American people—and especially Latino voters—made clear that immigration reform was the way forward," said Luis Guerra, Executive Director of Causa Oregon. “I certainly hope that Congressman Greg Walden will reject these political games and support the movement of a bipartisan solution that will fix our immigration system once and for all.”

This House bill is a reprisal of the notorious Sensenbrenner bill which passed the House in 2005, and motivated millions of immigrants and their allies to take to the streets in peaceful protest. It also applies the tenets of Arizona's "show me your papers" law nationwide. It is the exact opposite of the thoughtful, fair, and comprehensive immigration solution most Americans want.

According to a recent a bipartisan poll taken in 29 states, 72 percent of likely voters support immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship.  Support from Latino voters is even greater. A recent poll from Latino Decisions found that 84 percent of Latino voters support the bipartisan Senate plan, which includes a path to citizenship.

Guerra added, “We know that in Oregon, there is broad support for immigration reform with a roadmap to citizenship from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Plus, it’s the right thing to do for our economy and for immigrant families across our state. We understand that the House needs to have its own process on immigration, but the House Judiciary bill is unacceptable. We will not stop fighting until legislation that criminalizes our communities is defeated and both houses of Congress pass a common-sense solution with a clear path to citizenship.”

Illegal immigration is at a ten-year low. And re the drug cartels, they wouldnt be selling drugs up here if Americans werent buying them, right? Can a drunk blame the liquor store for his alcoholism ? I live in Mexico, and it is sad how hard people have to work for basically nothing. Mexico is not a poor country, it is just that not much at all makes it through the government to the people. That is exactly where we are headed in the US. We will get less and less and have to work harder to get it. And it isnt the "illegals" that are bankrupting us, it is the damned military/industrial/financial pirates that are looting us. Look up costofwar.com for the ever growing price of perpetual war for profit. We pay...they profit.

I know anon, they do get more rights, its more than you even know. But kicking them out is not the solution. Round them up and take them over the border and drop them off? Nah, cant do that. What people need to realize, and wont believe me and I wonder why I even do this, is, this was all planned by the powers that control at this time. Some call them globalists, bankers, jews, whatever, I dont even care what they are called, I just know what they are doing. They planned the North American Union decades ago, and they control the government who allows it. Problem is, along with the hard working, good hispanics that came here, it also brought drug cartels, and many who live off the system. The system invited them here with promises of money, welfare etc to bring down the U.S., make us a third world country they can control etc..thats all I got for today. BY the way, besides hospitals closing down, good doctors quiting their profession, the lies about the economy, and I told you all long ago that the stock market and housing market are only up because of 85 billion dollars a month being printed to keep it going, which is our money, well, Bernanke simply hinted that he may draw back a tiny bit and the stock market is down almost 400 points. I told ya, they are printing money out of thin air to prop up the stock market and housing market. If they stop printing money, everything collapses..I told ya. The hispanics will live in a country worse than the one they left.

In a hurry, will write more on this tomorrow, but, they are not criminalizing immigrants. They are debating what to do about immigrants who committed a criminal offense by coming here illegally...Just thought I get that across first will elaborate tomorrow. My children are 1/4 hispanic, but the truth is the truth and the headline is extremely misleading..I care about the hispanics, but I put truth first. Will continue this in the morning.
