Tool Box Causes Salem Civic Center to be Evacuated

(SALEM, Ore. ) - City of Salem employees were evacuated Wednesday morning from the Vern Miller Civic Center after someone found a suspicious device.

Salem Police spokesman Lt. Dave Okada says the black box was just a bit bigger than a shoe box, and was left near a window on the first floor.

Police quickly closed off the north entrance and parking garage as they investigated the device. The bomb squad was called in and a robot used to investigate the device.

A police robot was able to look inside the box and find that it's contents were not of harm to anyone, so at 11:00 a.m. employees were allowed back inside.

Police are looking for a man who was scene in the area before the package was found, to see if he may have left the box by mistake.

Police did not say what they found inside the box. Which several city employees tell Salem-News.com was a tool box.
