(MOLALLA, Ore. ) - One person died Sunday evening after losing control of the sport utility vehicle he was driving on Highway 213 south of Molalla and crashing into a power pole. The pole was split and the vehicle came to rest on its top off the highway. Highway 213 was closed several hours due to down power lines. At approximately 8:30 PM a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Salvador Compean, age 51, from Scotts Mills, was southbound on Highway 213 at a high rate of speed near Wagon Wheel Road when it left the highway and struck a power pole. The Jeep came to rest on its top and the driver was partially ejected. Compean was not using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office are completing the investigation. Alcohol is a possible contributing factor in this fatal crash. Highway 213 was closed for several hours due to down power lines after the power pole was sheared. PGE responded to the scene to make needed repairs. ODOT handled traffic-related duties and detour.
