(SALEM, Ore. ) - The 40th Annual Oregon Pupil Transportation Association State Safety Exercise was held at Summit High School in Bend on May 31.

There were a total of 71 participants in the all-day event. Salem-Keizer Public Schools had six contestants qualify to participate and 11 personnel serve as judges of the event.

The event is designed to test not only their driving skills through the negotiation of an obstacle course, but also through a knowledge test of Oregon’s Department of Motor Vehicle's rules of the road and the Oregon Department of Education's rules for school bus drivers.

There are 11 driving events that are scored, in addition to a written test, pre-trip test, and a surprise test (usually just one question that gives bonus points).

Drivers with the fewest number of mistakes, in the written and in the driving tests, receive points. Drivers compete in three categories of buses: general transit, general conventional, and mini-bus.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools bus drivers did very well.
