Help Locate Missing Second Grader in Portland, Oregon

The young boy did not come home from school today.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Multnomah County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a second-grade boy who failed to return home Friday afternoon from Skyline Elementary School, in northwest Portland.

School officials said Kyron Horman was supposed to arrive home at about 3:45 p.m., and the boy's father and stepmom alerted the school when he didn't show up. The last time he was seen was Friday morning about 8:45 when Kyron's stepmom left him at the school after looking at science fair projects.

Now authorities say that Kyron did not attend classes all day, and though he usually rides the bus they were unsure if he rode it on Friday. One thing is for sure, he didn't get off the bus at home, if he somehow got on it.

District officials said they alerted other parents via phone.

Anyone who sees Kyron Horman is asked to contact police dispatch at 503-823-3333.

Editor's note: I strongly suggest not bothering with the ridiculous phone number listed above, it is an endless maze; if you know anything about the whereabouts of this boy, dial 911 and be insistent that they take your report.

There is a strong possibility that this young boy has been kidnaped and is trafficed to Louisana I recall 5 boys and girls in a car all the same age(5-8) yrs. with license plates from Portland,Oregon The car stop at a road side hwy facility and left the kids in the car which looked druged. The young mans was very nervous (18) yrs of age and extremely tired after a long drive. The young man resembles the boyfriend of the missing boys step mother of which they are friends. I always thought that this encounter on that day was of a mystery to me and I felt bad about not questioning the driver why the kids were not in car seats all the same age and didn't look to be related? This incident had taken place in the early summer of 1985 but has bothered me ever sence then.

Editor: Get out of here and don't insult people over a story like this.

I agree with Kathy in Ohio above. Something is fishy with the stepmom's story.

Why don't you check sex offender registry in area nearest school and his home? I have a cousin his stepson has been arrested for living to close to park where kids play? Sometimes it not common sense that solves things sometimes it is the uncommon.

I find it very odd that no one not one person saw his mother drop him off especially if there were people around because of the Science Fair. That just leads me to believe that he wasn't actually dropped off. I don't mean to accuse, but something is fishy here and my heart breaks for this boy. Also enough of blaming the teacher. This is the school board's fault if they do not have any policy of reporting absent children! Shame on them! That should be the very least they should have in place in this day and age! I pray for his safe return.

I am truly concerned about this child. I am sure the investigators are doing a thorough job of checking things out, but i wonder who else was in the hallway when Kyrons mom last saw him. Is there no video surveillance in the school? I feel all schools should begin to monitor the halls and classes by video. This will be beneficial on more than one account. In would also keep mean teachers in line. Homeschool rocks!

we pray for the safe return of Kyron. HOmeschool rocks!

I hope Kyron is found; as a teacher I can't understand why the school didn't call the family in the morning when he was absent if his parents hadn't called in his absence. They gave whoever did this a six hour headstart. On another note, as a teacher I find it ironic that the commenters who are shouting, "This is why homeschooling is best!" apparently can't write a grammatical sentence or spell correctly. :0)

NE teacher June 10, 2010 8:01 am (Pacific time)

I am a teacher in NE. In our community, we are required to report absences by 8:30 and parents are called immediately if they haven't contacted the school. This is sometimes irritating to parents, but this is why we call. Also, second graders are curious, I have a trap door in by classroom that goes into a crawl space. I keep a bookcase on top of it because every year, all year long the kids ask what's in it. Does the school have anything like that, also what about under the stage, surely someone checked this space. My heart is aching for this child.

I went to Skyline Elementary School from 1985 to '86 and during my time there I ran into a few troubled areas. But I never once got myself separated or lost. I sure hope this young boy is found safe, sound, and alive. I hope that if he is found that it will finally bring closure to his friends and relatives. I wish his friends and relatives the very best in finding him safe and sound. I support everyone who is doing all they can in trying to find him. Good luck everyone.

my oldest daughter home schools I was so sad when she started this. I wanted the kids to have the friends and things the school can give. But when she came to me with the list of kids missing ever year. she said see Mom this is why I don't. The laws the courts the jail the FBI no one cares that all these kids are missing. I will not have my kids be one on the list. Home school is the answer. They won't save the kids break the schools. The teacher is to blame for this. It was her job to see for his saved. In June last year a 11 year old was taken walking back from her friends home. she never been seen again in WA . The story goes, the little girl and her brother was in a fight some one that knew them stopped the fight and send the boy home. The little girl when to her friends house. On her way home she was taken. The person who sent the boy home is to blame for this. May be it should be no child goes any where a lone ever.

Maxine June 6, 2010 11:43 am (Pacific time)

The teacher is to blame for this happening, when she didn't report the child missing when he was to be back in his class. what is wrong with our schools today. Home schooling is best, the laws don't care about kids missing look at the growing list of kids missing. The little Washington girl that been missing from last June 2009 still missing. Do they not see our laws need to be harder. Like death to them who take our kids. I will Pray for the family and the save retrun of this little one.

shawna June 7, 2010 10:16 am (Pacific time)

Ijust gotta wander if he wasn't in classes why the school did not call his home I thought it was standard practice, all 3 of my kids schools call. One freaked us out one day calling to ask where our son was when we had dropped him off at school turned out he was tardy and they apologized for the scare. I said dont at least I know my son is safe and I'll be notified if hes not in class. So again why was no report made home?

Mama OC June 5, 2010 5:51 pm (Pacific time)

Was anyone able to get thru to report this tip?? I will try as well if not. Too hinky for me to just let go when a little one is missing. This kind of thing doesn't happen here often. My heart aches for his family.

Editor: Yes, we contacted the MCSO and were able to pass the information off to an FBI agent, thanks!

Tim King June 5, 2010 1:20 pm (Pacific time)

Editor: I just spent 15 minutes trying in vain to reach a detective and advise them of this strange contact, but this is the police and we are in 2010 and it is far more important it seems for them to screen the calls coming in than to answer them. I suggest taking half of these officers off the streets in their police cars who spend all day writing Oregonians tickets, in a hard economic time, and make them answer the damned telephones, I'm really angry, I feel like the odd comment on this story should be brought to the attention of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, good luck if you are trying to do the same. As I wrote above, just call 911, don't believe a word when they tell you that you shouldn't overwork the dispatchers. They need more, far more, and this is a great example of why.

Concerned Parent June 5, 2010 12:29 pm (Pacific time)

What do you mean you have a few suspicions? And you reported "most" of it??

Editor: I have to agree with concerned parent, that leaves people believing you know something that you didn't tell police, that is very concerning, can you please fill in the blanks?

Jamie from Skyline June 4, 2010 9:15 pm (Pacific time)

I go to school with Kyron. I am 13 and in the 7th grade at Skyline. My little sister is in Kyrons class. We are all sad and we have told our friends and family. I posted it all over Facebook hoping for help. Some of my friends know things about it and have a few suspicions. So do my family and I. We have reported most of it to the police already.
