(MONMOUTH) - A two vehicle crash on Sunday morning involving a sport motorcycle and a pickup on Highway 51 north of Independence resulted in the death of a Monmouth man. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Salem Area Command are continuing the investigation.

According to Sergeant Mark Davie, on July 28, 2013 at approximately 11:30 a.m. a Chevrolet pickup operated by Billy Austin, age 77, from Monmouth was northbound on Highway 51 near milepost 5. Austin attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway and went into the path of a southbound Yamaha sport motorcycle operated by, Bradley Mosey, age 22, from Independence. Mosey struck the right front of the pickup and was thrown from his motorcycle onto the hood of the pickup and through the windshield coming to rest in the rear seats of the pickup. Witnesses told troopers that neither the motorcycle nor pickup was speeding at the time of the crash.

Both victims were transported by REACH air ambulance to Salem Memorial Hospital. Mr. Austin was pronounced deceased at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. Mosey suffered non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash and is being treated at the hospital.

Mr. Austin was wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash. Mosey was wearing a protective helmet and other safety gear that minimized his injuries. Troopers credited Mosey's protective helmet and safety gear for minimizing his injuries from the crash.

(OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation and no enforcement action has been taken. Troopers do not believe that alcohol or speed is factors in the crash.

(OSP) was assisted at the scene by Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), Polk County Sheriff's Office, Dallas Fire, Polk County Fire, and REACH air ambulance.
