(ELKTON) - The Douglas County Sheriff’s office recovered the body Friday morning of a Scio man who drowned on the Umpqua River Thursday. Sheriff spokesperson Dwes Hutson said divers found the body of 39-year-old Gary Charles Weaver just before 10:00 AM. Huston says around 4:30 PM Thursday night, the county 911 center received a call indicating Weaver had gone swimming in the Umpqua River at about 4:00 PM. He was with friends who were staying at the Big K Guest Ranch. Apparently Weaver and a friend decided to float through a section of rapids. Neither subject was wearing a floatation device. Weaver's friend decided the current was too fast for his ability and got out of the water. Weaver continued floating down the rapids and disappeared after a couple of minutes Huston said.
