(SALEM) - Between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM, residents are asked to joins thousands of communities across the nation to open their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outside visiting with neighbors and police.

National Night Out is designed to: 1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) Generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts; 3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations; 4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organizing and fighting back.

It can be a simple front yard block party or huge close-your-street block party potluck with games and activities for children.

Whatever your choice, National Night Out is an opportunity to join with your neighbors to send a message to criminals that your block is united.

Also, commemorative t-shirts will be given to block party hosts – while supplies last.

Last year there were 44 Keizer neighborhoods that hosted events.

Many neighborhoods throughout Keizer will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, potlucks, dessert socials, visits from police, flashlight walks and youth activities.
