Sluts, Slut Walk and Studs

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - I don’t even know why I am writing this. I chanced upon the subject in the July 18th issue of The Nation with the title Talk the Talk, Walk the Slut Walk which should intrigue almost anybody.

The word slut is defined as: 1 – a slovenly, dirty woman, slattern; 2a – a woman of loose morals; 2b – a prostitute; 3 – a bold brazen girl (used humorously). The word derived from Middle English slutter. That was a mouthful.

My response was what in hell is this all about?

I did read the article, then website postings. They are incredibly entertaining, with 486,770 views including videos.

It all “started” when Toronto, Canada Constable Michael Sanguinetti was addressing a Women’s Safety Forum at York University and made the comment: “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.”

Founders of York University Safety Forum Sonya Barnett and Heather Jarvis jumped on this like a rooster on a june bug. They mobilized about 3000 women in Toronto for the first Slutwalk on April 3, 2011. This produced so much publicity that the concept spread to major cities all over the United States and the world. There are already about 100 stories if you search Slutwalk.

I have written about the subject before especially about the appalling number of rapes and female harassment in the U.S. Military. It has even brought about a Congressional investigation.

I even wrote a story about the male perpetrators of these harassments and rapes. The strange irony about this is that the male equivalents called Don Juans, Lotharios or studs usually do NOT have a pejorative meaning. Worse is that male rapists usually get away with it or “boys will be boys”. I am troubled by the usage of the word slut. The connotations are much too harsh. However, these women even have large SLUT buttons and they are really raising Hell which is about time.

In Portland, Oregon, a slutwalk is planned for Sunday, July 31, from 1:00 - 4:00pm at the Terry D. Schrunk Plaza (SW 4th and Jefferson).

I do have some advice for the STUDS (you know who you are). You will get much more mileage if you treat women with respect and a modicum of equality. These modern women are no longer willing to endure this “macho man” B.S.

To all Slutwalkers: In my article, I wrote that I was troubled by t he word SLUT. Checking my dictionary I found... SIREN - A beautiful, seductive woman, temptress. That to me is more appealing, even better than WENCH.

Ha haaa! I love that you are announcing the Portland Slutwalk Dr. Leveque! Thanks for keeping an open mind and reading the article. I think you understand how empowering it is for women to take that word back. Saying it "out loud" takes the power away from it. Thanks for sharing the article from 'The Nation.'
