Parents of Salem-News.com Founder Die in California

The Kings were married in 1941. They passed away this week leaving a legacy.

Charles and Nellie King
Charles and Nellie King

(MORRO BAY, Calif.) - It is being called one of the greatest love stories of all time. The parents of Salem-News.com founder Tim King passed away this week after 66 years of marriage.

Charles and Nellie King died within 12 hours of one another in their home in Morro Bay, California. Charles was 90, Nellie was 84.

Their sons, Tim and his older brothers, Rick and Ken King, say their parent's life was one filled with love and inventions.

Charles King built the first motor home that ever cruised the highways of America. Built in 1947 from aircraft aluminum on the chassis of an old car called a "Graham," the "camp car" as it became known was literally assembled with parts from dozens of cars, handcrafted parts and aircraft components.

Nellie King's main love beyond her husband and children was her antique collection which eventually became the inventory for the Glass Basket Antiques in Morro Bay which she owned and operated for over twenty years after Charles' retirement.

Charles and Nellie King are being laid to rest together today in Cayucos, California at 2:00 PM. There will be an expanded article on their life.

Tim, I am so sorry to hear that your parents aren't here any longer. When we loose our hold on people who mean so much in our lives it can really help open our hearts and eyes to the beauty to behold in how much they meant to us and how wonderful life is. How wonderful to hear of their long lives, their long love and that they were each other in the end. My best to you, Bonnie and the boys. Love you all.

Hi Tim, I'm so glad that you, Ken, and I were able to pull together, as I knew we would. Losing Mom and Dad, though not entirely unexpected, is hard, but the loving family they created will always endure. Love, Your brother, Rick

Dearest Tim and Bonnie, I just read the article and am so sorry. I know the saddness you are feeling. You always spoke so lovenly about your parents and how you feared losing them. My heart is with you in this time of saddness. Please let me know when you get back to Salem.

The Corridori Family July 13, 2007 10:36 pm (Pacific time)

Tim, Bonnie and Family, We are very sorry for your loss. You have always spoken highly of your parents and they sound like a very special couple. Take time to sort through your feelings and memories and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Partners in life, partners in heaven. What a wonderful story of love and devotion. This is not a loss, only a separation as in time you will be with them again.

Leonardo July 13, 2007 8:04 pm (Pacific time)

This is sad news, Tim. You will miss them, but the time you were with them will stay in your memory forever.

Thanks all of you. I appreciate the support very much. I also look forward to the day that we do publish obituaries. Never does one understand the importance of that until they face a moment like this. My dad fell in April, a hard fall on an uneven walk going up to his door. At 89, it was just too much for him to fully recover from. Toward the end, dad's lungs were filling with liquid from congenital heart failure, he was a proud man in an uncomfortable state. As we were worried about my dad's recovery, my mom became ill and suddenly began losing consciousness when she stood up. In both cases, their blood pressure was falling when they stood. So, my mother passed away with my nephew holding her hand at 7:07 Monday night. Tuesday morning at 7:14 my father passed away with my nephew David holding his hand. We laid them to rest today. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and words.

rayme lacey July 13, 2007 5:39 pm (Pacific time)

i'm sorry for your loss. it's obvious that they only wanted to be together.my great-grandparents died within two months of each other after almost 70 years of marriage. i hope i will be blessed with that kind of love after so many years!

Lisa July 13, 2007 4:22 pm (Pacific time)

Since this news publication doesn't offer a section for obituaries, I would consider this as an obit rather than a news story. That being said, the reasons for their deaths are not required information for the reader. Mind your own business, "Just Me". To the editor, please send my condolences to the family.

Love until the end.... July 13, 2007 3:28 pm (Pacific time)

kinda like the movie notebook! what a happy ending! To go up to heaven together! God blessed then and God bless their family in this time of morn!

Anne July 13, 2007 2:55 pm (Pacific time)

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, Tim. It sounds as though your parents were blessed with long lives full of love.

Just Me July 13, 2007 1:17 pm (Pacific time)

Since the story author clearly has much inside information on the details, I'm curious how the two came to die and/or how they died so close together.
