(KENNETT SQUARE, Pa.) - 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was was euthanized on Monday after a long struggle for survival. Co-owner Roy Jackson called the decision difficult but the right thing to do. Barbaro was an American thoroughbred racehorse that decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby and was a heavy favorite in the Preakness Stakes. On May 20th, 2006, he fractured three bones in and around the ankle of his right hind leg shortly after the start of the race, an injury which not only ruined any chance of a Triple Crown win, but ultimately led to his demise. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. After initially favorable reports regarding its regarding the shattered leg, Barbaro developed an infection in the broken leg in early July, followed quickly by a severe case of laminitis in the sound hind leg. Through the surgical removal of most of the laminitic hoof, aggressive pain management, and the use of a sling, Barbaro began a slow recovery. By September 26th, 2006, Barbaro's prognosis was improving and his left hind hoof had grown about 18 millimeters in the heel. On November 6th, 2006, the cast was removed and replaced with a bandage, a move that suggested that Barbaro's recovery was progressing well. In January, Barbaro suffered a setback in his recovery due to complications in the laminitic hoof. I think you agree...it is time to put him out of his misery...and save more of our national resources being wasted in pursuit of a new "royalism".

a thoroghbred goes lame and is "euthanized" for his own good.,if the president.,not a thoroughbred, goes lame, what then? I am not suggesting anything radical but at least send him out to pasture.,in the desert surrounding the Great Salt Lake perhaps?

Sorry to see B. go this way, but best to put him out of ongoing misery. Is this decision anything like "impeachment" at another level ???

Obviously KS is not a horse lover. God speed Barbaro!

spending 2006 battling a potentially fatal illness, barbaro was my inspiration to keep positive. in essence we progressed slowly. his spirit is an inspiration. it's time for him to again run, and know freedom.

pft, dont feel bad for him. thousands of other horses have the same thing happen to them. but they get no publicity, they get sent to slaughter, or if they are lucky.. they get shot then and there. He was living the high life. Just because people watched it on TV doesnt mean hes a special horse or anything
