(GRESHAM, Ore.) - Gresham Fire has issued some important safety tips that they hope residents will pay attention to as colder than usual conditions prompt some residents to utilize home heating methods that are questionable.

Gresham Fire Marshall Gus Lian says one of the first things to remember is that you should never utilize area heaters that do not have tip over and temperature limit switches. A 39-year old woman died in an overnight fire that was related to a space heater.

"Area heaters should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet. If cords are a necessity, always use the shortest length cord required, of proper size incorporating an internal circuit breaker."

Lian also says it is vital that residents never place combustibles like clothing; plastic bins or bags; cardboard or paper within three feet of a heating appliance including baseboard heaters. And he says it isn't just people who have to be watched.

"If you have pets, ensure they cannot tip the heating appliance over or push combustibles up against the unit."

This fire expert says that if you use candles, you should never leave them unattended, and blow them out before going out or retiring for the night.

"Keep candles at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn and keep wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch. Extinguish and remove candles that burn down to within two inches of their holder."

Another good strategy in raising the safety level is the use of candle holders that are sturdy. There are holders that won't tip over easily, and he says you should be sure they can collect dripping wax and are made from material that cannot burn or break due to heat.

"Place candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface away from edges and any place where they can be knocked over." Liam says you can not always predict what is going to happen, and people can't be too careful when it comes to fire safety.

Another area residents need to pay attention to is the adequate cleaning of chimney or flues. He says it is also extremely important to dispose of ashes in a safe manner far away from the house or vegetation, never in cardboard; plastic or paper receptacles;ensuring they are completely out as embers can nest within the mass.

Also, remember not to heat your house with BBQ equipment or propane heaters and run generators at a safe distance away from the house and any openings.

Liam says you can call the fire department at (503) 618-2355 with any safety questions or concerns you have. You can also visit your local fire department or district's Website to learn more.
