(NAPLES, Fla. ) - Former Tennessee Senator and Hollywood actor Fred Thompson today quit the Republican presidential race after poor finishes in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

He announced his withdrawal following another bad showing in Saturday's primary in South Carolina. Thompson finished had third in a state that he had said he needed to win.

Thompson said: "Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."

Thompson supported Senator John McCain in 2000 in his unsuccessful race against George W. Bush for the party nomination. He did not say whether he would endorse any of his former rivals.
