(SALEM, Ore.) - Forecasters call for mostly cloudy conditions as we approach the Martin Luther King Holiday Monday. Conditions will grow clear and cold into the night with a chance of sprinkles and flurries in the evening. The snow level will drop to 1000 feet but no snow accumulation is expected. Lows are expected to be 20 to 25 degrees with a north wind blowing 5 to 10 mph. Snow will be ending on Sunday across Washington, including in Seattle, but it will be accumulating across the higher elevations of the northern Rockies with cold air pouring against the mountains. Some showers will dampen the Oregon and northern California coast. A stationary front is set up across the Northwest, separating bitterly cold air over the north-central part of the nation and a chilly air mass farther west. A storm will ride southeast along the front and will bring the heaviest snow to the higher elevations of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Up to a foot of snow will fall in the mountains in northwest Wyoming, while less with up to 6 inches falling in the mountains of the rest of the Intermountain West. Heavy snow will still fall across the southern Cascades with up to 6 inches of accumulation. Snow will also begin to shift farther south into the Sierra on Sunday. Through early week, a cut-off and slow-moving low pressure system will continue to gather moisture off the Oregon and northern California coast. By Monday, rain will be over the northern and central California coast with rain showers in the central valleys. Snow showers will continue to blanket the Sierras. Moisture will creep farther south and will bring drizzle along the southern coast of California. Locally, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be mostly sunny with highs only reaching 30 to 35 degrees and a northeast wind is expected in the 15 to 25 mph range. Monday night will be even colder with temperatures expected to drop to as low as 15 to 20 degrees in Salem and continuing northeast winds 15 to 20 mph. The National Weather Service is calling for continuing clear and cold conditions through Thursday. A high of 40 degrees is anticipated for Thursday, along with a chance of rain and snow and overnight lows drop to 25 to 30. Friday will bring another cloudy day with more chances of rain and snow and lows will be 25 to 30.
