Hundreds of Corban Students staff to Participate in MLK Day Volunteer Projects across Salem

Activities in Oregon's capitol city honor one of the nation's greatest leaders.

Dr. Martin Luther King was a key figure in the American struggle for Civil Rights.

(SALEM) - On Monday Jan. 16, hundreds of Corban University students, staff and faculty will volunteer thousands of hours on more than 30 projects across Salem.

The full day of service will honor the contributions of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and his call to serve others and for people to make a difference in their communities.

Projects include painting at the Knudsen & Wipper Teen Center, sorting donations and cleaning at Helping Hands, preparing the Northgate Peace and Forgiveness Community Garden for planting and landscaping projects at Wallace Marine Park among the many that are planned.

Projects:

Knudson & Wipper Teen Center, 1395 Summer St. NE, Salem

Volunteers will help with a painting project

9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Boys & Girls Club of Salem, Marion and Polk Counties

Read a Thon – Volunteers will read with students at all seven Boys and Girls clubs locations with a competition for most hours read.

9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity

Volunteers will help build homes for low-income families –

Cherry City Build – 5744 Samaritan Lane S, Salem

Veterans Build – 915 Fuller Lane S., Salem

Faith Build – 5719 Samaritan Lane S., Salem

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Community Gardens – Various

Volunteers will help community with weeding, composting, mulching and other projects

Noon to 3 p.m.

Helping Hands Resources, 1755 13th St. SE, Salem

Volunteers will help sort donations and cleaning projects

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Historic Deepwood Estate, 1116 Mission St. SE, Salem

Volunteers will help get seasonal gardens ready for spring, interior cleaning and organizing

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Reading for All, Salem (Contact Arturo Vargas, 503-588-7975, for location)

Volunteers will sort books donated during Holiday Book Drives in December

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Northgate Peace and Forgiveness Garden, 3260 Northgate St. NE, Salem

Volunteers will help prepare community gardens for spring planting

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sunnyside Organics, 105 River St. NE, Salem

Volunteers will help paint Sunnyside Organics’ new location and various other projects

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wallace Marine Park, 200 Glen Road W, Salem

Volunteers will assist with trail improvement and landscaping projects throughout the park

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pringle Creek Cleanup

Volunteers will assist with Pringle Creek cleanup projects between Deepwood and Bush’s Pasture parks

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tierra Rose Senior Living Community, 4254 Weathers St. NE, Salem

Volunteers will play games, do activities with and give manicures to senior citizens

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
