Oregon`s DeFazio Votes to Implement The 9/11 Commission Recommendations

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio voted Tuesday for a bill to implement the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission, which he has been urging since the Commission's report was published in 2004. The bill will enhance homeland security at airports, in our airways, and in our ports, and will allow our first responders to better communicate with one another. The House passed the bill Tuesday night by a vote of 299 to 128. "One of my highest priorities has been to implement the common-sense recommendations of the 9/11 Commission," DeFazio said. "Improving explosive detection at airports, scanning containers before they reach our ports, and inspecting cargo on our airplanes will go a long way toward securing our nation against an attack. Today's legislation will also help our first responders communicate with one another in an emergency, improving rescue efforts and helping keep Americans safer." The bill includes a number of long-overdue steps to substantially improve homeland security, including: - Funding to meet the highest priority need of our police, fire, and other emergency first responders for state-of-the-art interoperable communications equipment. - Accelerating the installation of in-line explosive detection systems for checked baggage at the nation's airports and provides a dedicated $1 billion funding stream. - Creating a Checkpoint Screening Security Fund that will provide $250 million to improve explosive detection systems at passenger checkpoints at the nation's airports. - Phasing in a requirement for 100 percent inspection scanning of U.S.-bound shipping containers at foreign ports over the next five years. - Creates an Office of Appeals and Redress to assist passengers who are wrongly delayed or prohibited from boarding a flight. - Restoring the rights and protections for TSA employees and whistleblowers. In addition, the bill would alter the formula for key Homeland Security grant programs to ensure the majority of the funds it distributes is based on risk. The current formula has resulted in low-population states like Wyoming receiving more Homeland Security funds on a per capita basis than high threat areas like New York City or Washington, D.C. The change in formula reflects a 9/11 Commission recommendation that the formula for fund allocation be based almost entirely on risk. The legislation also included measures to improve existing programs to prevent the proliferation of WMDs and to establish a more robust Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.

Henry, All nations have had to get used to acts of terrorism. Europe has been the victim for decades. Sometimes terrorism is domestic and I would equate Timothy McVeigh with Janet Reno. The Europeans have been living with inside and outside acts of terrorism. Where do you get the 1% nonsense. Iraq has cost a fortune and the real terrorists are in Saudi Arabia. But we dare not offend the Middle Eastern Vanderbilts. Germany had groups like the Badermeinhof as domestic organizations. Do you want to live in a prison inside and outside your home? These things can not be controlled and have to be addressed one incident at a time. I am very surprised that you have not done your homework on 9/11. It was allowed and even facilitated by our administration. I say it again and again (like F.D.R. saying, "Your sons will not fight on foreign soil"). Loose Change, The Truth and Lies of 9/11" by Mike Ruppert, Alex Jones and Robert Gaylon Ross are other good sources of information. Look only on the internet. Sometimes I worry about you that you might be watching television or reading newspapers. A documentary on a DVD from the library or even Ballbuster (Blockbuster) is a good place for information.

To all: Don't confuse rational means in this action with 9/11 as an attack. Homeland security risks must be faced;this begins the job. Container traffic huge risk open to easy bomb or poison attack; ck Columbia barge runs, port count, men in know. Air traffic highly vulnerable; fly and see. 1% of Iraq cost can make big difference: cheap insurance.

We know there were no WMD, we know that we attacked by Saudi's, we know the Bin Laden family was rushed out of the country, we know that the Bin Ladens have been friends with the Bush Family since the 1970's, we know that 9/11 has more than the finger prints of our own administration on it, we know about Larry Silverstein, we know about the buildings collapsing in pin-point-perfect demolition style, we know 1000 times more than this and some fools still believe the 9/11 commission? Why don't you put your faith in Catherine Harris while you are at it? How about believing in Santa Claus? Get the heck out of here with this garbage already! Are you trying to make people nauseous? Congressman DeFazio, does your pension mean more to you than this country? Enjoy your new quest of burning taxpayer dollars on this Alice in Wonderland trip you have chosen. Please stop wasting taxpayer money on all of this fantasy. I was in high school when the towers were built and all the students hated them because they were so darn ugly and we wanted the Empire State Building to represent New York.

Al: You missed another fact: Several corporations now larger in GNP than many smaller "countries." Re propaganda, now repacked for peddling via "news"papers and too-many tv, too.

Albert Marnell January 13, 2007 6:09 am (Pacific time)

There are no more countries, remember we are globalized now. A few states like North Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina are practically owned by foreign multinationals. The Queen of England has always owned large tracks of land in Kentucky, way, way before 9/11. What the people are told by groups like these moronic commissions is always far from the truth. On one hand we are told that globalization is beautiful. Yeah, if you are Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands and go to Bilderberg meetings. Let's hear about Bilderberg meetings on a regular basis instead of all of this camouflage propaganda. Propaganda as you know is a polite word for lies.

Albert Marnell January 13, 2007 6:02 am (Pacific time)

The 9/11 Commission was a joke and full of it. They are not telling the truth about how some people in government allowed us to be attacked (A new Pearl Harbor). This was all done as a pretext to invade for oil. Most Americans will say, "Who is Pearl Harbor?" They are really with it!
