Six Killed, Four Injured in Plane Crash Off Alaska

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

(KODIAK, Alaska) - Six people were killed and four injured after a small plane crashed into the waters off the southern Alaska coast Saturday.

The Coast Guard, Kodiak Police Dept., and Alaska State Troopers responded to a downed aircraft 100 yards northeast of Kodiak Airport.

A Servant Air, Piper Navajo Chieftain carrying 10 people crashed at 1:48 PM Saturday afternoon after take-off near runway 36.

Four passengers were immediately recovered by an Andrew Airways float plane near the area of the crash and Trident Seafoods. One other passenger was recovered by a Coast Guard rescue helicopter.

The first five recovered passengers were taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, where four people are in good condition.

The plane originally submerged after crashing into the waters near runway 36; the tide near the crash area has since receded.

Weather at the time of the crash was 20 knot winds with clear skies.

Killed were the pilot, 50-year-old Robin Starrett; and five passengers from Homer: Stefan F. Basargin, 36; Pavel F. Basargin, 30; Zahary F. Martushev, 25; Iosif F. Martushev, 15; and Andrian Reutov, 22.
