Registration Underway For Free 3-Week Parenting Class

The class fills up quickly and there is room for only 35 parents.

(SALEM) - Michael Hammond, Prevention Intervention Resource Specialist with the Salem-Keizer School District, will be teaching a special 3-week parenting class for parents who are concerned about drug/alcohol issues that involve their children. The class is free and will meet at Houck Middle School, 1155 Connecticut SE. All materials will be provided. The starting date is January 23rd, with subsequent classes on January 30th and February 6th. The class meets from 6:30 PM till 8:00 PM. Parents should call Houck Middle School at (503) 399-3446 to register for the class. Topics to be covered include: 1. Establishing rules around the use of drugs and alcohol. 2. Use of parental consequences for alcohol and drug use: logical consequences, tracking, monitoring, supervision, confiscation, forfeiture, and response cost. 3. How to avoid arguments and conflicts around alcohol and drug use. 4. Choice of friends and influences. 5. Signs and symbols to look for. 6. How to establish a personal network. 7. How to intercede on your child’s behalf. 8. How to provide incentives and encouragement for abstinence. 9. Community resources to access help materials are drawn from the Decisive Parenting curriculum and will include discussion and video vignettes.
