(CORVALLIS) - The Benton County Board of Commissioners have voted to accept a $390,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to expand the county's emergency radio and microwave communication system. The grant will expand upon $950,000 Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) secured for Benton County in SAFETEA-LU, the 2005 transportation bill. DeFazio's funding will improve first responder data and voice communications in and between authorities in Benton, Linn, Lane, Coos, Curry, Douglas and Josephine counties. "Interoperable communication is key to effective disaster response. The absence of compatible radios among emergency responders slowed rescue efforts on September 11th and caused unnecessary loss of life," said DeFazio. "I have been fighting to fund this important priority and am pleased that the federal government is helping ensure Benton County first responders can communicate with each other in emergency situations." "The DHS grant will allow us to expand communication coverage, eliminating dead spots, for sheriff patrol and other emergency responders throughout Benton County," said Benton County Sheriff Jim Swinyard. "By expanding our network, we will fill radio communications gaps between Eugene and Salem and provide coverage along Highways 20 and 34 to the coast." The Benton County Sheriff's Office will identify communication repeater sites and start the process to build the infrastructure to support the expanded communication system Articles for January 2, 2007 | Articles for January 3, 2007 | googlec507860f6901db00.html | |

I am tired of being eye-balled by brain dead security and retired police trying to make extra money. Why doesn't the Department of Homeland Stupidity allocate money to protect homeless shelters or prisons. If you don't like the prisoners, what about the staff? This all gone to the point of absurdity. Maybe Australia is the answer for most Americans who see through this crap. Let's emmigrate.
