Feb-27-2008 23:06TweetFollow @OregonNews 'I Am The Cure' HIV Prevention Campaign Launches in OregonSalem-News.comOregon's efforts are part of the larger HIV STOPS WITH ME initiative that features HIV-positive spokespersons in cities cross the country.
(SALEM, Ore.) - This month state public health officials are launching a new phase of the HIV-prevention campaign, "HIV STOPS WITH ME," now in its fourth year. "I am the Cure, You are the Cure" is the message, delivered by HIV-positive Oregonians via billboards, posters and other ads. "Prevention is the best way we can curb HIV transmission, and people with HIV have an important role to play in preventing its spread," said Mitch Zahn, HIV prevention manager in the Oregon Department of Human Services. Oregon's efforts are part of the larger HIV STOPS WITH ME initiative that features HIV-positive spokespersons in cities cross the country. The campaign targets only people already infected with HIV. HIV STOPS WITH ME has run in Oregon since 2004 and targets HIV-positive people with messages that promote personal responsibility and self-esteem. It also features an interactive Web site that includes news, articles, stories written by HIV-positive individuals and listings of events. "Anyone can send questions into the Web site and we'll respond," said Jerry, one of the Oregon spokespersons pictured in the ads. Extensive evaluation shows the campaign significantly increases the belief among HIV-positive individuals that they have a responsibility to protect their partners by disclosing their HIV status and using condoms. The campaign has garnered numerous awards for excellence in advertising and communication, including Webby, Telly and Davey awards. It can be viewed on the Web at HIVSTOPSWITHME.org. Last year more than 200,000 people visited the Website.
