(SALEM) - UPDATE: On Tues., 2/26/13, the pedestrian was identified as Richard Russell DUNSMORE, 48 yrs., (dob: 06/23/64), who is described as a transient. Next of kin notifications have been made. Salem Police Department responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle crash at 7:11 p.m. Monday, in the 2500 block of Lancaster Dr NE. Once officers arrived. Responding officers determined the crash involved a single motor vehicle and a pedestrian. The pedestrian was deceased at the scene. The investigation revealed that a 1999 Dodge Caravan (gray in color) was traveling southbound in the curb lane of Lancaster Dr NE being operated by Meredith Howton (40 yrs. of age) when the van struck an unidentified adult male approximately 40-50 years old, who was apparently laying in the roadway. The pedestrian was dressed in dark clothing and this incident occurred in a darken stretch of Lancaster Dr NE. The driver stopped and remained at the scene of the crash and has cooperated with the police investigation. At this point, neither alcohol nor excessive speed appear to be a factor with the driver involved in this incident. The street was expected to remain closed for approximately one more hour. The crash is still under investigation by the Salem Police Department Traffic Control Unit. If anyone has information or may have witnessed the crash, please call the Salem Police Department Traffic Control Unit at (503) 588-6171.
