A "hindsight thinker" is one who approaches a situation with the bennefit of facts not available at the time of occurence. As far as I know, she still hasn't been found and that is extremely tragic. I would be the first to offer condolenses had the situation diverged from the path it currently on. But the minute the family blamed the police my face felt red. Enough with blaming the ones who tried to help, without "hindsight" thinking. The families of the climbers that died last month tried doing it, the family of Beverly Johnson tried doing it and now this family is doing it. Sounds more like the crowd-mentality and self preservation than anything else. Tell me to "piss off" all you want, but my folks wont get that way BECAUSE I step in when required and refuse to let others field my families mistakes. I remember being lost as a child in a shopping mall. I remember the terror I felt at not being with my parents. But once they found me they didn't blame me! They took the blame on themselves, as they should have, in the fact they lost me, not the other way around. My family showed me more about true love that day than if they had denigrated my lost status by blaming the people they enlisted to search for me. What a legacy to leave their own children...when in doubt, blame others...it's the American Way!!

Grey; I personally wish your parents to get lost and disoriented on the road, a missing persons report turned in and the results of a search locate them, and they are rescued and returned. Then I hope some pissant like you or even me, writes in and complains over money being wasted. They found two people yesterday in Klamath County using Air National Gaurd equipment, a success! And other documented search operations have turned out successfully, and a staggering number of fatal auto accidents have been caused by drunk (with rare exceptions) male drivers under the age of forty driving the wrong direction, a greater "danger" than an 80 year old who got lost, and you discounted her value as it were to your standards. Your initial comment was callous and insulting, disregarded any feelings human wise for her, her family, or anyone in like straights, and for that I tell you to Piss Off again!
S.LaMarche; March 6, 2007 4:36 pm (Pacific time)
Yeah Grey, you are a hindsight observer and obviously knew her situation.,how in the hell are the authorties supposed to know it would turn out "fruitless" until they proceeded? and if you get lost one day, so what? don't expect any compassion from emergency services. Your statement is about as relavent as mine, I'd hoped they would of found her and if in the area I would have volunteered to "waste my time and recources" in a fruitless search. So much for relevance.

Hardly constructive???? Old, medically/mentally suspect woman inability of family to care for their own blaming police for a supposed screw-up side-scan RADAR search, patrol search, river patrol search, etc-etc-etc = EQUALS = Wasted Taxpayer money and a woman too dangerous to drive. I fail to see the irrelavance of my intial statement. Had the decision been made by her family to pony-up to the critical thinking bar and order a helping of self-reliance and stewardship maybe the money spent on this fruitless search could have been allocated to health care or education or better equipment for the officers searching now.
S.LaMarche; March 2, 2007 5:43 pm (Pacific time)
your inital comment was hardly constructive.
Grey March 2, 2007 4:51 pm (Pacific time)
S. LaMarche, I speak from experience, from both sides of the issue. Taking the keys is and was hard! Being called an "emotional blackmailer" hurt, but I did it anyway. I wont have my parents end up like Dena Kline or Beverly Johnson. I took the critical initiative and took the burden of transport on myself. Before my grandfather died he thanked me for caring enough to do the hard thing. It shouldn't be the will of the State to do it, but since the Whine Patrol (aka: looney libs) piecemeal our family functions to the government sector, instead of we the citizens, it may have to happen. Doctors must be required to report medical conditions that negate driving. ODOT must include policies to regulate older drivers and test cognative and reflex skills. We do it for the teenagers and it has worked far better than the live and let live approach. Just yesterday an elderly woman drove her car through an intersection in Portland and KILLED her husband. Your comments only reflect I am right and you have no substantive constructive comments.

hey Grey.,piss off! how'd it be if it was your mom or you! what an anus!
Slam; February 28, 2007 4:55 am (Pacific time)
any update on Mrs.Kline or the man named Bill who went missing on the 26th of Jan.?
Grey February 27, 2007 8:04 am (Pacific time)
Once again taxpayer money is being spent to locate someone who, at least medically, shouldn't have had a license to begin with. Adult children of medically fragile parents need to stop blaming police for their own lack of fore-thought in removing the car keys. Being pulled over for suspected drunk driving means she is more of a danger to other drivers than anything else.

A web page has been created for missing Dena Kline at www.childseeknetwork.com/A/kline.htm

Lela: Yr point re failure to get her safely home --twice-- is what makes story-idea fly... Re kids: They DID tell me, for some months !! But it was other drivers that scared me away...
Lela February 26, 2007 8:45 am (Pacific time)
Makes me wonder why the people she talked to who also acknowledged she seemed confused didn't take the time to find out what was wrong and help her out. It seems sometimes people are just so wrapped up in their own time and space to not take the time to identify when help is really needed. I think the Amber Alert for elderly people is a great idea. As we get older sometimes we don't recognize, like Henry did, that it is time to get out from behind the wheel of a car. I hope I can recognize the need when I get older, but I am sure my kids will let me know!
Hank Ruaark February 25, 2007 3:55 pm (Pacific time)
C-M: Great story-idea, will pursue since recognize need, at 89, having given up driving self some months ago...scared half to death...of other drivers ! But real need exists, your idea worth researching...tnx !
Curmudgeon February 25, 2007 12:10 pm (Pacific time)
Perhaps the Amber Alert program should be expanded to include missing elderly people. I sure hope this case turns out better than the other one recently in the news. Newberg at 7 p.m., Mollala at 11 p.m., then Oregon City at 1 a.m. certainly doesn't sound like the travels of a rational person. Maybe this should be a wake-up call to those of us with elderly parents. I believe there are GPS systems available that are vehicle mounted and track the vehicle's movements and location. Salem-News could do a great public service by doing an article on the subject.
Henry Clay Ruark February 25, 2007 11:37 am (Pacific time)
How many such will it take before contention-tied Legislature restores effective strength to Oregon Troopers ? It was cult-cabal that forced cuts when they occurred; now should put up, shut up, or get out of the way. Oregonians voted recently; that should tell the story loud, clear and clean, too !!
