(Salem) - Firefighting units arriving on the scene of a structure fire at 4186 Sunnyview Road NE Friday say fire and heavy smoke were coming from the front portion of the structure.

Fortunately the occupants Jerry Baker, his son Christopher, and stepdaughter Devon who were all home at the time of the fire, escaped without injury.

Salem Fire`s Bill Holmstrom says firefighters made an aggressive attack that contained the fire to the garage, saving the rest of the structure from certain destruction, `Firefighters had the fire contained within minutes of their arrival, stopping the fire before it was able to spread inside the home, preventing thousands of dollars of damage to the home and its contents."

The fire caused $5,000 damage to the residence and contents.

It appears to have been caused by a careless smoker. Mr. Baker stated that he was smoking out in the garage prior to the fire. Investigators determined that ashes from cigarette had dropped into a pile of combustibles.
