Feb-11-2011 09:06TweetFollow @OregonNews Victory for the Egyptian People: Mubarak Steps Down!Bonnie King Salem-News.comThe dictator has fallen, let peace prevail!
(SALEM / CAIRO) - The people have done the unthinkable- they have toppled the presidency of Egypt. Hosni Mubarak gave a disappointing speech Thursday night, not achieving the desired effect of placating the masses. His father-like lecture to the people was absolutely rebuked by the hundreds of thousands listening, awaiting his notice of stepping down. He did not go there. After his fruitless speech, those assembled in Tahir Square did not leave, they were not satisfied with Mubarak's empty promises and the masses grew. This morning, Vice President Omar Suleiman made an announcement via state television that Mubarak had left Cairo, and stepped down from his 30 year position as President. Mubarak had held power since 1981, when the late president Anwar Sadat was assassinated. Mubarak was Sadat's VP, and assumed the position after Sadat's death- and refused to give it up for 30 years. For decades, Egypt citizens' human rights have not been honored, and the world expects this to be a transformational moment for the people. Most expect this to be the first of several big changes in the region, they are not reserved to the country of Egypt. The reverberation of the cheers and shouts will not stop anytime soon, it is being felt around the world. This life changing event is like a pebble in the pond, making waves as far as the eye can see. The people have stood together, rejected their government and ejected their leader, 30 years of repression is over. The people have won. They will awake tomorrow to a new day, a new country, a new future. The whole world is celebrating, and thanking their creator that their prayers have been answered. Today, we are all Egyptian. Bon et al: Excellent summary, Bon. For more background--which most of us need !-- see NATION 2/21 issue-lead "REVOLUTIONARY Moment"; and do not miss "America's 'Shah' in Egypt", pp.7/8, showing descent of current explosion from Sadat-regime and Camp David, with inevitable impacts on continuing Israeli issues.

Anon: It is YOU missing the major point here, sir. ANY open comment in dialog, face to face or via Web/channel, is worth ONLY what we can deduce from what we know of the comment-maker. When you choose "anon" you show you seek to hide source and its reliability. IF YOU do not trust what you say enough to make statement in checkable, ID-able, reachable name, why should we trust it either ?? !!

Its a shame...you all are missing the point. This was all planned. By the elite. They wanted regime change, they started planning this long ago. Its also a test run. What will the people do, what will the military do, how will the internet kill switch work, and how will people react to the internet down. Then, obama supports omar, israel supports murabak, knowing the people will not accept them, and slip in someone like El Baradei who will be the "new and improved" dictator. The people in Egypt revolted mostly out of hunger, not because they really knew the facts. If you all dont research, this lesson will soon come here to the U.S. Actually, it kinda did with obama already. THey fooled you into having another puppet dictator here also..and you fell for it. So did those who supported mccain.

If it could happen there, it could happen anywhere!

Absolute disgust as Joe Biden takes platform to impress upon world that violence against peaceful protesters is unacceptable... That is unless it is his bread and butter Israel and the peaceful protesters are Palestinian.

This is wonderful news for these amazing people! The future will not be easy. The interests of Israel and the US will be strongly played out in both open negotiation and through typical economic strong arming. The people will be wise to watch the manipulations of opposition puppet Baradei and the billionaires he represents. Congratulations to the people of Egypt. They have demonstrated to the world that peaceful sacrifice and unbending commitment can topple a despot. Power to the People!!! Now on to toppling the American Wall St. regime!!

"Democracy" is a foreign concept to the Egyptians, it has never existed there. The political institutions that exist in this country makes it ripe to go the way of Iran. If that happens, then [illegally] nuclear-armed Israel will be boxed in, so pray that the Muslim Brotherhood is kept at bay by the military. Unfortunately we can see what happened in Turkey about 8 years ago as the extremists started gaining power. This is going to be a very dangerous time period waiting to see what develops. Unfortunately many in the west often apply their values to other parts of the world mistakenly assuming other peoples think like them. We have a bunch of neophytes in the Whitehouse, so keep your fingers crossed. Think: Suez Canal and energy tranfers from Egypt to Israel that many are calling to cut off.

I don't think the repression is over yet; but I am positive the people will not give up demanding their inalienable RIGHT for full freedom until they have it.

TODAY is also the first day of The Global Intifada/Arabic for Rise Up and Cast Off The Popular Committees Against the Israeli Occupation of Palestine wrote: "We call on all free nations in the world, especially Europe and the U.S., to get out in massive demonstrations on 11 Feb. 2011 to confirm the right of peoples to live in freedom and dignity -- a day of anger against the Israeli occupation of Arab land, and as a beginning of the Global Intifada." http://wearewideawake.org/index.php?option=com_contentandtask=viewandid=1973andItemid=243
