(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police say traffic has again reopened after a serious motor vehicle crash on Kuebler Boulevard. Lt. Steve Birr with Salem Police told Salem-News that two vehicles are involved. Four people were transported to Salem Hospital.

"Firefighters had to extricate a man who was trapped in a vehicle for 40 minutes, they received super heavy damage."

Birr says 43-year old John D'Angelo III of Salem, was westbound on Kuebler in a 1994 Dodge pickup when he crossed over into the eastbound lanes, striking a 2002 Toyota SUV.

The driver of the Toyota was identified as 56-year old Douglas Jensen of Oakland, California. Passengers in the Toyota were identified as 21-year old Alexander Jensen and a 17 yr old female, both also from Oakland, California.

Jensen and his passengers were in Salem visiting relatives for the holiday and were enroute to I-5 to return home at the time of the collision.

Birr says the road was closed for three hours after the crash that happened shortly before 11:00 AM, between Battle Creek Rd and I-5.

He added that more information will released later today.

Police and other emergency responders ask that motorists still use caution when passing the area around Kuebler and the freeway if responders are still on scene.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind people about the seriousness of front end collisions. There have been several median crossing accidents on I-5 in the recent past. After one particularly serious one which resulted in fatalities, Don Jordan (ODOT) said that cable and post systems would be installed soon at appropriate locations along I-5. He stated that such actions were relatively inexpensive and very effective. It seems that the post and cable system may have prevented serious tragedy during the I-5 accident near Aurora last week. I feel compelled to bring this issue up because I just noticed that there is no effective barrier here in Salem (near Market Street and elsewhere) to prevent crossover accidents on I-5. In fact, the raised median near Market Street would actually act as a launching pad for cars that head toward the other side. ODOT needs to take immediate action - unfortunately, the only way this will happen is if there is some political force that produces action. If any effective person reads this, please call Jeff Scheick and tell him to get on it right away.
