(KEIZER, Ore.) - Firefighters in Keizer arriving at the scene of a structure fire at 12:54 AM say they saw heavy black smoke coming from the roof, and fire shooting out the front window at 4582 Verda Court NE. The fire was quickly spreading to the adjoining unit. Fire Department Spokesman Joel Stein says an aggressive attack quickly knocked down the flames and firefighters entered both units to confirm all people were out. Firefighters then initiated search for numerous pets and were able to account for all but one cat that was later found deceased at 4582 Verda Court NE. The cause remains under investigation however investigators believe the fire started in the living room of unit 4582 Verda Court NE. Stein says the investigation will continue with follow-up interviews of all occupants from each unit. "In all, six people have been displaced from the fire. Red Cross was on the scene assisting the occupants with initial needs." One person was treated by Paramedics at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. Story continues below Fire and smoke damage to the structure is extensive, particularly in unit 4582. Unit 4592 sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. The structure in believed to be insured by the owner however, tenants of both unit did not have renters insurance on their contents.
