(GAZA STRIP PRESS TV) - At least five people have been killed by an Israeli airstrike on a town in the central Gaza Strip, according to a Press TV correspondent in Gaza.

The attack, the deadliest to hit the Gaza Strip in months, happened near the central town of Deir al-Balah late on Saturday night, witnesses said.

Israel drones flew over the Gaza Strip following the strike, they added.

The Israeli military claimed that its aircraft targeted a group of men who were preparing to fire rockets into southern Israel.

Israel waged a war against the coastal enclave from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009.

More than 1,400 Gazans, mostly civilians, were killed in 22 days of Israel's devastating air, land, and sea attacks, which also left thousands of people, injured and reduced dozens of buildings to debris.

Israel has been launching incursions into the blockaded territory on a regular basis ever since.
