Dec-12-2007 12:44TweetFollow @OregonNews New Law Would Give Satellite Subscribers Local Oregon NewsSalem-News.comSmith and Wyden are working to change a law that prevents access.
(Washington, D.C.) - Satellite television subscribers in Wallowa, Grant, Umatilla and Malheur counties would be able to watch Oregon news stations under a new law proposed by Oregon Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden. Subscribers are currently limited to Idaho or Washington broadcasts. “The Washington State football score isn’t useful when you are rooting for the Ducks or the Beavers,” Senator Smith said. “Our bill will correct the law so local news is local and reports of rain mean reports of rain in your own town. Our goal is to end the frustration faced by satellite subscribers.” “It’s time to eliminate an injustice that prevents Oregonians from receiving television broadcasts about Oregon,” said Senator Wyden. “This bill would bring common sense to a federal communications law that has been a sore point for people who live in the eastern part of the state.” Federal law limits broadcasts in Wallowa, Grant, Umatilla and Malheur counties to stations from Washington or Idaho. The bill would correct the federal law that prevents satellite carriers from providing Oregon stations to these counties. Neal et al: Re FCC, chairman and two others now highly visible, vulnerable due to stupid stand to broaden big media domination and allow further greed-driven subterfuge undermining public and Congressional intent. More than million irate citizens joined in drive to offset last-time/try by then Ch. Powell. We can do it again, if we work together. moresoon on this, too.

Stick - cannot do that. A couple of the channels I watch are not broadcast, plus being disabled I cannot climb on the rook to install or maintain such. Also in a little over a year I would need hundreds of dollars of extra equipment. Plus the antenna, cables, rorot, etc are not free so the myth that method is free is flawed. Just give me ala carte service. The public is screaming for it... sooner or later the FCC has to cave in. Ah well...
Stick with broadcast TV December 12, 2007 10:49 pm (Pacific time)
Neal, if you don't want to pay for TV, then put up and antenna and watch it for free. Ah well...

Neal et al: Precisely, that's one of key issues stalled by FCC chairman in response to industry pressures...defying legal mandate for action by his agency. Issue is complex, but open to full rational, reasonable further progress, worth millions to whichever group it benefits, consumers or cable et al. moresoon...never forget our voices, more than one million of them, changed last large giveaway under development by then Chairman Powell, son of soldier/statesman but no true public servant.

I do not give a whip who provides it but I want ala carte service. I watch maybe 8 channels so why should I need to pay $45 a month for 150 ch I have no interest in? Let me pay a $5 service fee plus $1 per channel I want and leave it at that. Ah well...

To all: This situation is one of far too many preventable by sensible action of FCC, in lieu of determined drive to widen small-elite ownership of media channels. Moreonthis soon in upcoming Op Eds surveying several such situations, and proposing some common/sense solutions well researched by national groups, to which you can assent or do otherwise as your own common sense decrees when you get to "see with own eyes". Might help offset ongoing national neocon/nonentity attacks on democratic open channels so devoted to solid issue-information for all.
