(KABUL, Afghanistan) - Doctor Mike Gangwer, a soil expert from the US Department of Agriculture, recently spent two days with nearly 60 fruit and vegetable farmers in the Panjshir province of Afghanistan. He taught the farmers about moisture conservation and nutrient levels in the earth. Doctor Gangwer is working with the Parwan and Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Teams, and remains impressed by both the knowledge and interest displayed by local farmers enrolled in his agriculture courses. “I am teaching them simple ways to improve their crops and yields," he said. As part of the class, each of the farmers brought in soil samples from their land for analysis. “These farmers have been farming their whole lives and know intuitively what works and what does not, but I am hoping to show them how small changes can improve the returns they get at harvest time,” he explained. As part of an outdoor lesson, Dr. Gangwer demonstrated the use of soil moisture sensors, providing an accurate measurement and indication as to when an area needs to be irrigated. This is important because the irrigation system in Panjshir fell into disrepair during decades of fighting and is being rapidly re-established, ensuring that the farmers are able to maximize the growing season. Farmland is at a premium in the mountainous Panjshir province and all available land is carefully managed and used. Panjshir has traditionally produced high value crops, such as fruits and nuts, which were sold outside of the province. Many farmers are considering the return to these high value crops. With external markets becoming more accessible with the construction of a road linking the province to Kabul, a more promising future is available.

Dr. Gangwer's work is so important. He is making real changes in people's ability to feed themselves. He is also showcasing what is best about America, compassionate people who are willing to serve others. This is the real secret to winning the "war on terror."
