Salem Seeks to Increase Water, Sewer Bills

This increase will result in an average residential combined monthly water and sewer bill increasing by $3.91 to $56.32.

(SALEM) - A public hearing for a proposed 7.5% water and sewer rate increase will take place Monday during the Salem City Council meeting.

Salem Public Works spokesman Mike Gotterba says in 2004, Salem approved increases for 2004 and 2005 at 6.5%.

This was based on the CIP (Capital Improvement Program) Challenge which called for Salem to reduce its 5-year capital program by $60 million while still completing needed improvements.

In the first two years of the program, Salem was successful in reducing capital improvements by nearly $62 million.

Recognizing the impact that inflation is currently having on the program, $20 million of improvements at the Willow Lake Water Pollution Control Facility were accelerated resulting in a net $42 million savings after 2 years Gotterba said.

A 7.5% increase effective February 1st, 2007 is recommended in order to complete an estimated $276.1 improvements over the next 5 years and to meet recommended debt coverage ratios.

This increase will result in an average residential combined monthly water and sewer bill increasing by $3.91 to $56.32.

Gotterba added that a comparison of residential water/sewer rates in 13 northwest cities shows Salem is ranked at seventh with six cities being less expensive and six cities more expensive.

On November 16th, Salem's Water/Wastewater Task Force endorsed the 7.5% recommended increase by a vote of 7-to-1.

The public hearing will begin at 6:30 PM in the council chambers, 555 Liberty Street SE.

Ingestion of fluoride has little benefit, but many risks. Whereas fluoride's benefits come from topical contact with teeth, its risks to health (which involve many more tissues than the teeth) result from being swallowed. Adverse effects from fluoride ingestion have been associated with doses atttainable by people living in fluoridated areas. For example: a) Risk to the brain. b) Risk to the thyroid gland. c) Risk to bones. d) Risk for bone cancer. e) Risk to kidney patients.

Surely if we all weren't "dumbed down" all these years we would'nt be under the control we are know...realizing that the wool has been pulled over our eyes and not being able to do anything but bitch and moan about it. That's where alchohol and drugs help out. To releive the state we find ourselves in by this poison flouride we poor more medicine /drugs/alchohol, whatever to feel better.

I have been drinking flouride in my water since I was a small kid. If the levels were so unhealthy the local municipalities would be aware of this and stop it. No one in my family ever died from flouride, only old age.

By the way, if you want to remove the flouride from your tap water, the best way is to install a reverse osmosis water filtration system in your home. that's the ONLY way to remove this harmful element. Other elements will be lost too, like necessary minerals, however they will be absorbed from the food you eat, as long as you eat a good diet. Just out of concern for the health of our communities, people should check the water tables to see how much flouride their water municipalities are adding to the local water supplies. Flouridation is now known to be the leading cause of bone cancers and other medical problems thanks to the free flow of information now available via the internet. Everyone paid dearly for the 2004-2005 at 6.5% water/sewer increase!! Any Volunteers, including those on the Salem Water/Wastewater TASK FORCE, want to PAY my water/sewer bill if the new rate of 7.5% is approved??
