(WALDPORT, Ore. ) - Highway 34 has been CLOSED in both directions about 16 miles east of Waldport following the failure of the highway's subgrade. Storm-related damage forced the Oregon Department of Transportation to close the eastbound lane of the highway at milepoint 16.7 late Tuesday afternoon. Diverted water running under the highway undermined a large section of the subgrade. Flaggers have been allowing single-lane traffic through the damaged area since Tuesday. Further degradation of the highway has made even single-lane passage controlled by flaggers unsafe. ODOT managers made the decision to close the highway at about 8:45 PM Thursday. It is unclear when repairs can be made and this section of the highway reopened.
