(CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.) - The Montford Point Marine Association and Camp Lejeune are scheduled to conduct a "Montford Point Marines Day" recognition ceremony at Camp Johnson on August 26 at 9:00 a.m. Gen. James Conway, commandant of the Marine Corps, and Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, will be in attendance at the ceremony. A Senate resolution passed on July 22, 2010, designated August 26 as "Montford Point Marines Day." Approximately 20,000 African-American Marines received basic training at Montford Point between 1942 and 1949, after President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a Presidential Directive that integrated the United States Marine Corps. August 26 marks the 68th anniversary of the first day African-American recruits began training at Montford Point. According to the resolution, the African-American volunteers who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II joined the United States Marine Corps to demonstrate their commitment to the United States, despite the practice of segregation, served the United States in a most honorable fashion, defied unwarranted stereotypes, and achieved distinction through brave and honorable service. Media representatives who would like to attend this event are asked to contact Base Public Affairs by close of business Wednesday, August 24. Gen. Conway and Sgt. Maj. Kent will be available to media for approximately 5-10 minutes after the ceremony to talk about Montford Point and the significance of the event.
