(SALEM, Ore. ) - A home in West Salem has been declared unlivable, and another home was damaged after a two alarm house fire Monday afternoon.

Salem Fire Department spokesman Laird Case says two people were inside the home, while another was outside when the fire broke out around 2:45 p.m. Case said that the homes occupants tried with buckets of water and a garden hose to put the fire out, but the fire spread to fast, and they called 9-1-1.

First arriving crews found the home, located at 2581 Ptarmigan Street NW, fully involved with heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the property. They quickly called for a second alarm, as the fire grew from the deck area up into the home and attic.

The fire burned so hot, that it melted the siding off the home next door to the east.

Case said the fire started in back of the home on or near the deck, and that the cause was still under investigation.
