(SALEM) - People who were traveling over Mission Street at the 12th Street Overpass Wednesday morning had a shock when they saw 20-foot flames lapping over the overpass rail. Not your average sight on your way to work, but then things around Salem have been something short of normal in the last few days as investigators comb through the rubble of a 4-alarm commercial fire downtown, and police chase leads about several live bombs that had been strapped to local cars. Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says firefighters responded to the brush fire on the Mission Street/12th Street overpass Wednesday morning at approximately 7:15 AM. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a rapidly moving fire traveling fast up the hillside of the overpass. Crews immediately went into action to bring a quick end to the flames. Firefighters were able to have the fire completely extinguished within minutes of their arrival according to Holmstrom. The overpass in the westbound lane was closed for approximately 20 minutes while fire crews did clean up of the area. The fire appeared to have been started by an illegal campfire. No injuries were reported. All people are reminded that this summer has already seen several different wildfires in Oregon and firefighters say we aren't out of the woods yet. Anyone choosing to have an outdoor fire needs to be particularly mindful of the dangers posed by very dry conditions and wind.
