(GALVESTON, TX) - The National Weather Service is keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Erin in the Gulf of Mexico as it nears the lower Texas and Mexico coastlines.

Texas Governor Rick Perry has ordered emergency vehicles and personnel, including National Guard troops, to the region in advance of the weather system.

The NWS says rainfall and thunderstorms associated with Erin will begin to affect the area tonight.

On Thursday, the storm is expected to make landfall somewhere between the mouth of the Rio Grande and Corpus Christi, and is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain.

The NWS says significant flooding problems are possible and flood watches may be required for a portion of southeast Texas.

The greatest threat for flooding appears to be over Jackson, Matagorda, Brazoria, Wharton, and Fort Bend Counties.
