(NORTH POWDER, Ore.) - A California truck driver died Wednesday evening when he had a medical problem while driving a commercial motor vehicle westbound on Interstate 84 near North Powder, Oregon State Police said.

The truck's co-driver was able to safely bring the truck to a stop after the man suffered what may have been a heart attack. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Lt. Gregg Hastings with OSP says Wednesday at approximately 8:15 p.m. an Oregon State Police trooper responded to a report of a medical problem involving a commercial truck driver westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 283.

Preliminary investigation indicates 72-year old Charles Edwin Brown of Banning, California was driving a 2000 White truck for Atlas Van Lines when he suffered a medical problem and became unconscious.

The co-driver was able to take control of the commercial vehicle and safely steer it off the road and stop.

The co-driver flagged down help and attempted CPR. Quick response units from North Powder and Baker City arrived within minutes and subsequently pronounced Mr. Brown deceased at the scene.

OSP troopers from the La Grande Area Command office are completing the investigation.
