(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Karl Rove, the man credited by many with winning George W. Bush the last two US presidential elections, has resigned effective August 31st.

Rove, the president's deputy chief of staff, said he would leave his role to spend more time with his family.

A White House spokeswoman confirmed the resignation, describing it as a "big loss".

Perhaps Bush's most powerful White House aide, Rove submitted his resignation to Bush on Friday, he told CNN's Suzanne Malveaux in an e-mail.

After talking with reporters, the president is heading to his Crawford, Texas, ranch where he will remain for the rest of the week.

Bush nicknamed Rove "the architect" for creating the plan that won the White House in 2000 and 2004.

Rove told the Wall Street Journal that he thought Hillary Clinton -- a "tough, tenacious, fatally flawed candidate" -- would win the 2008 presidential nomination.

Rove's election campaign clients have included George W. Bush (2000 and 2004 presidential elections, 1994 and 1998 Texas gubernatorial elections), Senator John Ashcroft (1994 US Senate election), Bill Clements (1986 Texas gubernatorial election), Senator John Cornyn, Governor Rick Perry (1990 Texas Agriculture Commission election), and Phil Gramm (1982 US House and 1984 U.S. Senate elections).

To all: For fully-considered, deeply documented Op Ed re Rove-run, see above. Don't EVER "promote" own Op Eds, since they are "Opinion", but this historic occasion demands all the attention we can bring to this sad and very threatening Constitutional situation--as following events will soon prove for "your own eyes", via entire media spectrum.

I have serious doubt that he will not continue to have his hand in top-level republican strategy. Although I shed no tears to see him leave, will his influence truly depart?

Ironic how Rove commented about H. Clinton, when he, being an 'architect' of Bush being in Office was the reason Bush's popularity is going down. There's something fishy about Rove's timing of his resignation....and before the next elections coming up in the fall... hmmm...

What's that one about "sinking ship" departures ? But cannot escape history he has made, with desperate, deep damage to our democracy. See current ATLANTIC for authoritative details and full assessment of consequences.

Don't worry........he's not 'gone'. The Dems don't have a sure thing in '08. Giuliani's past is too checkered. Other Repubs have their own 'issues'. My bet is he'll be working for Romney. Rom will need a strategy to get him past his defense contractor connections. Anon
