(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Look around the Willamette Valley and you will see the Max train running through Portland, buses riding through neighborhoods, and trains that cross state lines into Washington.
You may see all of this and think Oregon has public transportation pretty well figured out, as most people do, and reside in the comfort that with all the problems our country faces today, at least Oregon can get from point A to point B better than anyone else in America. While Oregon's public transit is excellent now, it lacks the long-term vision and plan to make sure it stays atop the leader amongst its fellow states.
Oregon's public transit system is a system of deception. There will be an estimated 1 million people moving in over the next few decades, roads that need to be maintained and fixed, buses that need better efficiency, and expansion of rail lines, yet Oregon has no long-term plan. For instance, the Pacific Northwest region received $590 million this year in stimulus money to jump start rail lines, increase frequency and reliability, and maximize efficiency, yet Oregon received only $8 million while Washington received the other $582 million.
The reason: Oregon had no long term plan, didn't do the required studies, and had no money committed. Oregon needs to catch up in order to be ready for the next federal dollars to come in.
We have an opportunity to ensure that the leadership from the next Governor and our local elected officials has a clear vision to move past our current challenges and expand clean efficient transportation, fix and maintain our roads, and invest in transit for the future.
Otherwise, Oregon will remain a state of transit deception; superior now but in serious trouble for the future.

Mr. Anonymous, none of your comments make any sense. You don't state what you object to in this letter, only providing a link to an article that is loosely related, which you then claim isn't what you really meant (again, your point is...?). If I were you, I'd reevaluate my self-perception of being "learned" and a "good researcher". At least you don't claim to be a good communicator. Maybe waiting until later in the day to crack that first beer might help. As for a real comment on this letter, I'd like to see the author provide a reference for the figures he's using. By no means am I 'learned' on the subject of Oregon's public transportation system, but I do know that our federal government has spent at least $100 million (so far) just to RESEARCH options for a new I-5 Interstate Bridge. Is that part of the $590 million? Does that seem to you to be as much of a waste of taxpayers' dollars as I do? Lastly, what exactly is our "opportunity to ensure our leadership from the next Governor and our local elected officials has a clear vision..."? Are you indirectly supporting a particular candidate? Just now sure where you were going with that.

I totally screwed up..I think of myself as a good researcher, but then I post an article without reading the entire paragraphs. My apologies, I consider myself learned, but I do make mistakes. I do not like Paul Krugman, and he spins what I was trying to get across. My apologies, and my promise to do better in sharing with more insight in the future. This is one of my biggest screw-ups for the year. I was just in a hurry. I will be more careful in the future.

The author of this story, may want to read this article, and get a grip on reality as it really is: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/09/opinion/09krugman.html?_r=3
