(JAKARTA, Indonesia) - A powerful earthquake shook Indonesia's capital early on Wednesday, violently shaking homes and tall buildings and sending frightened residents fleeing into the streets.

The magnitude of 7.5 quake struck just after midnight Thursday, and was centred 65 miles east of Jakarta at a depth of 179 miles, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the quake was too deep to generate a large tsunami wave.

Indonesia is prone to seismic shifts due to its location directly along the notorious Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines.
