(SALEM) -
Salem-News.com is pleased to announce a new cartoon strip called nota bene, by local artist Glen Bledsoe. The addition of this regular installment on Salem-News.com is unique and exciting and couldn't be a better fit according to Editor Tim King.
Glen has been involved in writing and art since he was in elementary school, staying the course through his graduation from the Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art.
A bicycle ride to Oregon in 1975 left Glen with a great impression and introduced him to the place that he and his family would later call home. When his wife finished medical school, Salem was chosen as a great place to put down their roots.
Glen earned his Master of Art in Teaching from Willamette University. "I've been writing essays on technology and education for NEA.org (National Education Association) for a couple of years and also have co-authored 17 books with my wife for the library school market."
A search of Amazon for "Glen Bledsoe" will show the various titles that are available.
"I have some expertise in digital storytelling, and I am writing online curriculum for a course on digital storytelling for the Center for Advanced Technology in Education."
So what better place could this amazing artist end up than Salem-News.com? Nowhere we can think of. Welcome aboard Glen Bledsoe, to the news site that serves Oregon's capitol city.
The frame immediately below is an illustrator viewer. Just click on it once and the background changes slightly, then hover over the top right or left of the image and arrows will appear allowing you to progress through the comic, or go back.

Your idea is great Glen. Now how do you transfer this to the students who much need this kind of guidance? How do we get them interested in...DOING THE RIGHT THING?
Cathie English August 6, 2006 6:02 pm (Pacific time)
Hey Glen! Congratulations! This is really amazing. But then, I know your talent and I just want to keep encouraging you. I can't wait to tune in on a regular basis!

To answer James' question: Yes. From Wikipedia: "Comics (or, less commonly, sequential art) is a form of visual art consisting of images which are commonly combined with text, often in the form of speech balloons or image captions. Originally used to illustrate caricatures and to entertain through the use of amusing and trivial stories, it has by now evolved into a literary medium with many subgenres."
The Editor August 5, 2006 7:11 pm (Pacific time)
Wow James, I didn't mean to stomp on your rights so tragically. We have lots of comments that are stealthy attempts at advertising, other people who use profanity, which we try to avoid, and others who suggest that certain criminal acts should be committed. So, sorry if your comment was deleted, it was just a mistake. And by the way James, we have several thousand sites linking to us for their news, search "salem-news.com" in quotes on Google and you will see more than 50,000 entries. Think what you like, but we are "mainstream" media, we just aren't part of a huge, insensitive media corporation. I think it is funny that you equate the posting of your comment to "freedom of the press" too, because only a tiny percentage of our competition's letters to the editor ever see paper and ink.
James August 5, 2006 6:14 pm (Pacific time)
Freedom of the press? How come you screen posts? How come mine saying "This is a comic?" didn't get posted. The "mainstream" media in town does not screen posts.

Very Cute! I haven't seen Miss Crabtree for years. The art is excellent. I love Tim and Bonnie, I love Tim and Bonnie. Always throw in Kevin baby and Henry too. Now we have Tempest's brother. Just kidding. Welcome Glen! And Hail to the rest of the progressive staff at Salem-News.com.
