(SALEM, Ore. ) - Marion County Sheriff Raul Ramirez announced today that he plans to retire next month.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement as Marion County Sheriff effective September 1st", Ramirez said.

He began his career with Marion County as a Juvenile Parole and Probation officer and in 1975 joined the ranks of the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

"My 34 years of service to the citizens of Marion County have been very rewarding and sometimes challenging. I am proud to have been a member of this organization and honored by the fact that the citizens of Marion County chose me to be their law enforcement representative. I have no doubt that the Marion County Sheriff's Office will continue to set the standard for criminal justice agencies across the state and nation," Ramirez said.

Why am I not crushed with sorrow?

I am aware of a pending lawsuit against Marion County for misconduct at the jail. Maybe that is something that he wants to get away from? After the incident, his office refused discovery. I hope his retirement happens immediately. More importantly, let's hope that his replacement does a better job than he has pertaining his jail staff and his legal counsel's erroneous actions.

Don't read into too much. There are no pending scandals....He had bypass surgery a few months and during his recovery he probably thought about life being too short.

Why is he retiring so suddenly?
