(DOWNEY, Calif.) - Downey Workers Memorial Day is held every year in April to commemorate all those workers killed and injured on the job.

The recent deaths of over 29 miners in W. Virginia and the deaths of 16 workers everyday on the job in the US are evidence that our health and safety are under threat.

We support the strengthening of OSHA through supporting the Protecting America Worker’s Action H.R. 2067.

At the same time, movie, Kaiser and LACOE Workers at the Downey toxic dump site and community members have also been greatly affected by the failure to properly clean up the former super-fund site. The Downey Kaiser Hospital complex has also been built on one of the most toxic sites in the Los Angeles area and hundreds of workers have been sickened.

This is direct result of the failure of the developer Stuart Lichter to properly clean up the site, and also the failure of Federal and state regulatory agencies to properly regulate and enforce health and safety protection. The developer and Kaiser have shifted the healthcare costs to SSI and other public agencies while continuing to proclaim that the site is “safe”.

Today, this deadly toxic dumpsite continues to harm not only workers who are on or next to the site, but also people in the community. Stuart Lichter is also seeking to get Tesla Motors Inc. owned by CEO Elon Musk and Google owners Larry Page and Serge Brin to build a “green” electric auto assembly plant on the site with $465 million in Department of Energy DOE loans.

Is this our tax dollars at work? We are urging Congressman Henry Waxman to Congressional hearings for testimony under oath about this toxic dumpsite, and for epidemiological studies of all workers and people in the community paid for by the Federal government along with healthcare for the injured. Call Congressman Waxman, and ask him to meet with injured workers and hold hearings . His number is (323) 651-1040.

Please join with LA workers and their families at this memorial meeting and speak out, and demand healthcare and justice for all workers and people in the community.
