The Drive to Remember Fallen Officers in 2008

The 2008 Drive begins from in British Columbia and continue with stops in Seattle and Olympia, Washington, and Salem, Oregon.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon suffered the tragic loss of Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Kelly Fredinburg on Saturday, June 16th 2007. Deputy Fredinburg was killed in a traffic crash while responding to assist another officer.

Deputy Fredinburg was 33-years old when he was killed. He served with both the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. He served Oregonians for 8 years and 10 months. He is survived by his wife, Chris, and two children.

On April 30th 2008 Oregonians will gather at the Law Enforcement Memorial at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training located at 4190 Aumsville Highway in Salem to honor Deputy Fredinburg and to remember all 190 law enforcement officers from the United States and Canada that were killed in the line of duty in 2007. This memorial service will be the first event in Oregon for the international Drive to Remember.

Drive to Remember 2008

The Drive to Remember began in 2007 as a way to raise awareness about police officers killed in the line of duty. Two members of the Vancouver B.C. police department, Detective Tod Catchpole and Sergeant Steve Gibson created the Drive. Guardian One attended Deputy Fredinburg’s funeral in June.

The Drive to Remember involves a specially wrapped Hummer H3 called "Guardian One" that tours from Vancouver, British Columbia south to Los Angeles, California then east to Washington, D.C. Guardian One will travel nearly 5,000 miles through 1 Canadian province, 19 states, and 25 major cities before arriving in Washington DC for National Law Enforcement Memorial Week.

As part of the international campaign, people attending the memorial service at DPSST will be invited to sign banners for presentation at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC on May 16th 2008.

The 2008 Drive will begin from the Abbotsford, British Columbia Police Memorial on April 30, 2008 and continue with stops in Seattle and Olympia, Washington, and Salem, Oregon. The vigil and placing of a 190 carnations will take place beginning at 7:00 PM. The public is invited to attend.

• 190 candles and/or 190 carnations to commemorate each fallen hero
• Oregon Blue Knights and other members of law enforcement agencies will provide an escort for Guardian One to the memorial service

Additional Information

• A large banner will be signed along the route and delivered in Washington, D.C. In 2007, well over 1,000 people signed the memorial banners.

• In 2007, 56 families of fallen officers signed the hood of Guardian One.

• Each host site will receive a large “Drive to Remember” poster. The poster will have the state flag for each state visited along the 2008 route. It will also have the names of each officer killed in the line of duty in 2007. From a distance this will look like a thin blue line around the entire border of the poster, but close up, you will see the name of the officer and the department the officer worked for. Such as Kelly Fredinburg, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon.

Mary's husband, Detective Randy Nunnenkamp, of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was killed on June 6th 2006 while off duty. The Randall Lee Nunnenkamp Scholarship Foundation was established shortly after his death.
