Oregon Military Gala Announced

The event will be the first of its kind.

(SALEM) - The Marine Corps Family Foundation and the Marine Corps League Detachment 881 will hold a Gala honoring Oregon's military heroes, past and present June 16th. Connie Riecke is the mother of a U.S. Marine. She says the event is extremely important to anyone with a connection to someone who serves.

"This spectacular public event will honor all military branches including the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, Army, and National Guard and will include active duty, reserve, retired, and inactive members of the armed forces."

While military galas are not a new idea, Riecke says this event will bring together all branches of the military for a special evening that organizers say is hosted by the people of Oregon.

"The gala is scheduled for June 16th, 2007 in our capitol city, Salem, Oregon. Honorary guests include Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Oregon Gold Star parents, the Band of Brothers, and distinguished military dignitaries from across our nation."

She says individuals and businesses are invited to become Premiere Sponsors. There are a number of opportunities for businesses to participate. The people behind the event say all who participate will receive great promotional benefits and identifying support of our distinguished Oregon military.

For additional information, contact Connie Riecke at (503) 409-5905 or John Baker at (503) 364-6797 or (503)871-2624.

Proud Army Wife: Well said!

Vic, I am not implying that if you have not served in the military that your life is a waste. Every person who supports their family by either working and bringing home a paycheck or staying at home and taking care of the kids and everything that goes into maintaining a household deserves the utmost respect. I am a proud wife of a National Guard soldier who left his job and family to fulfill his duty as a soldier. I am the mother of three children and I work part time from home and take care of the kids and everything that goes along with it. I do not believe that people in the military deserve any more repect than the average hard working American, but they DO deserve respect. I do not agree with the president, the politicians, and even the military most of the time, but I have no respect for anyone who can degrade our men and women who are putting their lives on the line because that is their job. That is what they were told to do and they are not going to back down from their duty even if they do not agree with it. I am also a christian who does not like war and would love to see everyone live in peace, but that is not the way it is so we do what we have to do. We fight to stay alive, we fight for our loved ones, and if you are a soldier...you fight for strangers.

Yeah, it's Vic's pimple problems, either from his youth or a current situation. At least he admitted that he wasn't a veteran, usually his type does...

Vic May 1, 2007 9:16 am (Pacific time)

I would like one pereson to explain exactly, not vaguely, how killing poor brown people on the other side of the world is preserving my freedom...Talk is cheap and meaningless. How did the Iraqis threaten my freedom ? Maybe if you folks thought for yourselves a bit instead of reciting right wing rhetoric , youd realize that in this conflict , American troops are being used as pawns. Sending American kids into a meat grinder so corporations can make billions of dollars is NOT supporting the troops ..it is USING the troops in the worst way. And no , I wasnt in the military..I started a business that has employed working people for nearly 20 years now. I raised my kids and paid my bills and donated to charity and still do. I never have stood at attention in the dirct sun for hours in full battle gear , so I guess my life was wasted.I will never know the thrill and glory of being yelled at , berated and treated like shit,or putting my life on the line for minimum wage. I hope every person over there comes home safely and I live long enough to see Bush and Cheney on the end of a rope. Part of my problem with war is that I was raised a Christian...you know , that whole left wing Jesus crap.."Love your enemies and pray for those who spitefully use you" "Blessed are the peacemakers" and all that other crap that probably doesnt sit to well with you gung-ho types.

I assume the big issue for Vic, is pimples.

Osotan; April 30, 2007 4:21 pm (Pacific time)

Ditto, I feel it was an uneducated statement, the article on another track altogether. "Losers" vic?, I presume you won't be attending the event, but you might learn a couple of new items if you did.

Matt Johnson April 30, 2007 3:09 pm (Pacific time)

I agree, Vic is sadly insulting with his remarks. He is obviously someone without the courage to be in the service in the first place. I didn't see anything in this article about politics; indeed it is about people, especially those who live without their loved ones today because of the wars overseas. It is not endorsing policy to honor human beings. Better hope there's never a draft Vic, you obviously don't mind generating bad karma, it might return to bite you right in the ass. People like VIC are the exact reason our soldiers have to leave their spouses, kids, families and friends to fight to keep this country free, and so many get killed doing it! Vic, the only reason you have the freedom to say the crap you say is because of the soldiers. Do'nt support our idiotic president, don't support the war, but who in the hell do you think you are to not show support to the men and women that keep your sorry ass free!?!?! You say these kids can't handle the real world so they join the military?!? Could you handle being in the military? Could you run for hours a day without stopping? Could you stand at attention for hours in full battle rattle in the direct sun at 110 degrees without passing out? Could you go to a war torn country and get shot at every day while you're looking out for IED's? Think about what those soldiers do for this country that you yourself cannot do before you start putting them down. You are a disgrace Vic, you don't deserve to be an American!

Vic April 30, 2007 6:42 am (Pacific time)

Heroes ? How about the underpaid school teachers ,cops,RNs, single parents, everyday people who go through their lives and dont kill or terrorize people..just raise their kids and contribute to society .Why is it that any pimply faced 18 year old loser that cant handle the real world, so joins up with the military, is a hero ??? What a messed up society. And Larry, none of these grunts are doing anything "for the likes of me" I dont have any oil company stock, nor have I invested in Halliburton. So , like the average American , this war does nothing for me but drain our treasury and rack up debt for our grandkids. Heroes my ass !

Larry April 29, 2007 9:56 pm (Pacific time)

Its about time we thanked our local heroes, those who live selfless service. Some who have given all for the likes of Vic, who cant even read a story and get the "sponsor" bit. Good on.

Vic April 29, 2007 7:28 am (Pacific time)

Hosted by the people of Oregon ? Did we get a say in this ? This military adventure our Fuhrer is leading us on has already cost billions of dollars..I guess blowing a few more thousand is not a reason for concern. Isnt it cool being a warmongering society ?

Osotan; April 28, 2007 6:22 pm (Pacific time)

I'd like to attend, but am somewhat too distant geogrophically, so a poem; [give'm hell and Semper Fi!, might as well party cause we all gonna die!, so take it to the limit, take it to the sky!, and may those younger ones grow older, moms, dads, families, no need to cry, and for the ones that are gone too soon, no need to lie, one day the swords to plowshares, one day, no need to die.,and for today, with head bowed and hands to the sky, give them strentgh, and bring them back alive!. Peace is worth living for!,and we know why.] Belleau Wood, the "Buldge", "Porkchop Hill", Cho-Sin reservior, Dak To, Hill 881., Basra, Faluga, Camp Joyce and Helmand province are not figmants of imagination. I am humbled at the bravery of those who are there now, and wish they would be literally walking with you in "Salem"- "Shalom"-"Islam", one day it will be., Peace.
