(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - On Friday, at approximately 3:00 AM, the Corvallis Fire Department responded to a report of a restaurant filled with smoke in the 1400 block of NW 9th Street.

On arrival, firefighters found that the building and attic were charged with smoke due to a pot of beans left burning on the stove.

The fire was discovered by a passing police officer who stopped to investigate after smelling smoke.

Smoke damage occurred throughout the restaurant, attic, and the adjoining business.

There was no smoke detection system in the building.

Two fire engines, one ladder truck, and one command vehicle responded to the incident, carrying nine firefighters and a battalion chief.

The incident was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes. There were no injuries.

All residents are reminded that unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the home.

Always make sure that all stove burners are turned off and pots removed from the stove before leaving your house.

Smoke detectors are the first line of defense and an early warning system. Make sure all smoke detectors have batteries installed and are tested once each month.

For more information on this or any subject relating to fire safety, please contact the Corvallis Fire Department at (541) 766-6961.
