(SALEM) - Hundreds, possibly as many as one thousand Salem-Keizer high and middle school students will face disciplinary action for participating in Monday`s immigration reform rally at the Oregon State Capitol.

District spokesman Jay Remy says they will NOT give students who participated any special treatment.

Principals will follow the district's policy on truancy, or unexcused absences and they will face either in-school detention, or suspension from school based on the child`s school record Remy said.

At South Salem and McNary high schools, administrators say they urged students not to participate.

At Waldo middle school, students left class and marched on school grounds for about an hour then returned to class.

Some students reportedly used the rally as an opportunity to head to local malls, hang-out in downtown Salem, or go grab a bite to eat at fast food restaurants.

McNary assistant principal Jay Crystal said he is working with students on a voluntary school assembly on the illegal immigration issue so that students can make their opinions heard without violating the districts truancy policy.
