(SALEM) - Salem-area residents have an opportunity to discuss Greek tragedies, philosophy, modern poetry and plays through a free humanities course taught at Willamette University from May to August. The class, Humanity in Perspective, will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It’s open to low-income adults who do not have college degrees and who face financial barriers to continuing their education. Students receive free tuition, books, reimbursement for childcare during class, bus tickets for transportation to and from class and transferable college credit from Willamette University. The registration deadline is April 30. Applications are available online at oregonhumanities.org. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, able to speak and write fluently in English and willing to commit to attending class two evenings per week during the four-month program. They are not required to have a high school diploma or GED. The class is offered by Oregon Humanities and taught by Willamette University professors. The goal of the program is to promote the intellectual and personal growth of students, spark their interest in civic and community life and encourage them to continue their education. Since its inception in 2001, HIP has enabled hundreds of economically and educationally disadvantaged adults in Oregon to study the humanities in a college-level course. For more information, visit oregonhumanities.org or contact Course Director Sarah Van Winkle at s.vanwinkle@oregonhumanities. Thanks for mentioning this program. I sat in on a course last year, and I was moved by the experience.
