(SALEM) - A fire alarm at the Chemawa Indian School East of Keizer Sunday morning led to an evacuation of students who live in the school's dormitories. Salem Fire crews rolled to the scene at 3750 Chemawa Road NE at 5:22 AM. Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says that when firefighters arrived, they had smoke throughout the structure.

"They assisted in evacuating 3 dorms while they searched for the cause of the smoke. Firefighters discovered that a dryer that was running with a load of towels caught fire."

He says the fire was contained to the dryer unit itself. Students were able to return to their dorms within minutes of the discovery of the location of the fire. The loss is estimated at $500. There were no injuries reported.
