Medford Man Struck on FreewaySalem-News.com
Oregon State Police hope to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash.
(MEDFORD, Ore.) - Police say a Medford area man suffered critical injuries as he was attempting to cross Interstate - 5 near milepost 30 and was hit by a northbound passenger car.
Sergeant Mark Byrd with Oregon State Police, says Monday night at about 8:15 p.m., a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, operated by 71-year old Shirly Yanez of Oak View California, was northbound on Interstate - 5 near the Highway 62 interchange.
"As Yanez was approaching the Highway 62 overpass a male pedestrian, Sean Daily, age 39, from Medford, was crossing the northbound lanes of the freeway and crossed into the path of Yanez's vehicle."
Byrd says the Yanez vehicle reportedly struck Daily in the northbound slow lane.
Daily was transported by ambulance to Rogue Valley Hospital with critical injuries. Alcohol may be a contributing factor according to Byrd, as to why Daily walked into the path of Yanez's vehicle.
Yanez and her two passengers, 49-year old John Briggs, and 21-year old Jesse Briggs, both of Ventura California were not injured in the crash. All occupants in the Yanez vehicle were wearing safety belts.
Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into the crash. The northbound fast lane was closed for about two and a half hours during the investigation. OSP was assisted at the scene by Oregon Department of Transportation, Medford Fire Department, Medford Police Department, and Mercy Flights.
Byrd says OSP is requesting that anyone who may have witnessed the crash, please contact the Oregon State Police Central Point Patrol Office at 541-776-6114.
